Default Pre-season rules video

Fran tweeted this out earlier tonight. It's an interesting look at the officiating points of evidence and some videos of how these situations should be officiated this year. I'm glad to see, in particular, emphasis on the principle of verticality as it bothered me last year when defenders were able to invade the space of an offensive player and end up rewarded with an offensive foul.

Whether you like or dislike the interpretations, you might find the 23 minute informative for how the games are supposed to be called.

Thanks for posting this rules video, chuckb!

I thought it was interesting that a number of the examples showing violations in every category were not called properly last year. Most of the rules in this video aren't new. This is mainly a tutorial the rules committee created to put an emphasis on rules that aren't being enforced the way they were intended.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for cleaning up physical play in the post that seems to get worse every season. The Principle of Verticality has been misunderstood by players, coaches, and even a few officials for way too long. For example, the plays used to demonstrate a defensive foul when the defender invaded the offensive player's space and contact was made were both called wrong. The foul was on the defender, but the officials making the call pointed in the other direction, which meant they were going to make the call on the offensive player.

The only difference I see in this initiative and the other emphasis on the rules we have seen before, is what appears to be a determined effort to enforce the rules this time. Will the officials buy into what the committee is selling and do it for the entire season "in every conference," as the video promised? I'll believe it when I see it.

I have to concur but failure by the officials to implement the changes must be addressed by NCAA/conference administrations with punitive actions for those officials that do not comply. Otherwise same o', same o'.

I couldn't agree more! I meant to add pretty much what you said to my rant about the officiating.

As a former high school basketball official for many years, I appreciate the job officials do more than most. I'm also more critical sometimes because I recognize the mistakes they make. This so called new emphasis on the rules won't accomplish a thing if the officials in every conference don't make it happen.
