For us non stat geeks… what does this mean? I get it’s something per min played.. guessing higher # the better?

It's how many points OU won/lost by while this person was on the floor.

If I play 5 minutes, and the other team outscores us by 7, I'll have a -7 for that game.

And if I were to play a full 40-minutes with a team of NBA All-Stars against a high school team, I would end up a +50, 60, 70 or more, but that stat would have absolutely nothing--nada, zip--to do with my actual skills and contributions to the win.

That's an extreme--even ridiculous--example, of course, but it demonstrates how this particular stat matters only (if at all) over a prolonged period of time. Some NBA end-of-the-bench scrub could get significant playing time due to injuries in a game in which a teammate goes off from deep, scoring 60 points, and the scrub's +/- would be very impressive without him having made a significant contribution to the win at all.

this is correct .. it "can" give you an idea in a one game sample, often confirming good or bad play. but really it is useful over much longer periods ..

It is nice to look at against good teams over multiple games. But against inferior teams, the numbers can get inflated for starters who really don't contribute. Or the opposite can happen. Look at Jalon Moore. He missed one game and his numbers will probably never catch up with 6-7 of the other players. Cooper maybe in the same situation.

Last year the numbers helped CJ Nolan tremendously. By end of the year, he wasn't even getting minutes.
