I saw the All-College game in person. The ďMail ManĒ Karl Malone was terrific. Wayman was better. I will always be grateful that I got to see two of the greatest power forwards in college basketball history on the same floor together. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, afraid I would miss something.

Pic 1 - 2002 in San Jose. An absolute beatdown of Midnight Loot's Arizona Wildcats in the Sweet 16. Kinda/sorta/maybe thought we might be going all the way after that.

Pic 2 - 1999 in St. Louis. Watch out, Eduardo! Had more than enough defensively, just not enough juice to put the ball through the hoop. Ryan Humphrey's last game as a Sooner. Sparty won it all the next year.

I was there, Jeopardude! 8,500 people never made so much noise. Before or since!

That was such a bad call. 14 totally whiffed. I think that dude was Australian. Then Jerrells, their stud, missed TWO free throws at the very end.

Ah, the iconic 4-point Tony Crocker play! I was also there. Sooner Magic was alive and well in the LNC that night. My dad and I both lost our voices screaming.

Sitting just out of that picture dang it. Never heard that few people in LNC get deafeningly loud.

I was looking for a photo of this, but couldn't find one! Probably the most memorable four day stretch of regular season basketball for me. If you recall, David Godbold sunk one of the most beautiful 30 ft buzzer beaters I've ever seen a few days prior.

Quannas and crew made Walton/Arizona look like a bunch of pretty boys. I also thought that was our year.

That Indiana loss still hurts. Definitely top five for my all-time heartbreakers (for any team/sport). Had just knocked off #1 KU in the Big XII Championship, and ran eventual champion Maryland off the court in December. I probably coulda lived with a loss to Duke, but not that mediocre Indiana team.

In hindsight, it was pure stupidity that Najera came back into the game, but I'll be damned if I listen to anybody saying he's not the toughest hombre to ever lace them up for us.

Crocker's blocking me in that pic. I am RIGHT behind him. My wife is in the picture of Hollis draining the jumper against Tech. Godbold's winner was against Tech in Lubbock. If you watch it on youtube you'll see Chris Beard in the Red Raider huddle. The "play" we ran was garbage. But the shot was MONEY.

The horrifically executed play made the moment even more magical. I thought we had a chance inbounding it, but as more clock ran, all faith I had went out the window. If he airballs that like half of America would have, that would have made the not-top-10 plays of the week. I'm not one of Lon's most ardent followers, but there's no way he would drawn up something that ugly.

Godbold was no superstar, and he had a few bad moments (i.e. freshman year inbound pass), but he sure made it look easy at times. I remember our second round NCAA tourney game against Louisville. We start with three awful looking offensive plays, and Godbold bailed us out with three straight threes. We took a 9-4 lead (or was it 9-6?), but I looked to my brother and father and said "we're about to get manhandled." Godbold didn't keep bailing us out, and unfortunately I was right.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but two days prior to that Godbold helped right the ship after we blew a HUGE lead to St. Joe's in the first round. He was a really solid four-year player for us.

That Louisville game was about as ugly as it gets for a Sooner fan. We were a 6-seed, and we had NO business being on the court with them. What a bloodletting.

I was curious so I went back to the box score. I misremembered. Godbold did not score on the first three possessions, but he did score our first 9 points. We took a 9-7 lead at the 16:11 mark. Louisville went on to outscore us 37-13 for the rest of the half. I thought I was watching us get demolished by the future national champions, but that wasn't even close to the case. They got humbled by a UNC team that was demolished by KU in the Final Four.

You remember correctly about St Joes! We had a 12 point lead at half, and Godbold pushed the lead to 19 by scoring our first 11 points. The game looked over, but we went ice cold, and St Joes went on a 26-11 run to cut it to 4 with 4:19 to play. Godbold scored 7 of our 11 points during that stretch, or we may not have weathered that storm. He led us with 25 points -- 18 of which came in the second half.

The Louisville game was consistent with what happened basically every time we played a high level team that season. We get blown out more times than Iíd care to remember. Iíve always found that very telling with respect to Capelís coaching abilities. Good coaches find ways to keep their team competitive even when they are outmatched, but it never seemed to happen that season.

You are correct in that we got blown out quite a bit that season. I thought we were over-seeded as a #6. That said, I was ecstatic to FINALLY win a 1st round game as a seed other than 1-3. It was unfathomable that in the previous TWENTY YEARS, we had won only ONE 1st round game seeded outside the top 3. As such, even in hindsight, I would have taken a 1st round win and a 2nd round humiliating loss 1000 times out of 1000 vs another 1st round loss.
