A 6-1 shooting guard is likely the concern. I think a comp for Phipps is Tim Heskett. So if you think Heskett helped OU, then I think you would like Phipps. He can shoot and knows the game very well.
I agree with your assessment. I worry about his athleticism as anything but a shooter off the bench. And if that is what he is being recruited as, I'm fine with it. But I think there is a chance he doesn't he never really meaningfully contributes while at OU. If he even ends up here.

I am good with taking Phipps and I loved Heskett, they are just limited in their role. I believe teams played more zone during Heskett's days and it might have been easier for him to get his shot, but having a great shooter is generally a plus!

Exactly, not everyone has to be a star, a sharpshooter off the bench is a role every team needs filled

Agreed. A sharpshooter off of the bench is a role our opponents generally use to an advantage, not one utilized nearly often enough in OU’s offensive arsenal. I think Austin Reaves will be that kind of weapon next season. I have no problem whatsoever with using a scholarship on a recruit with Trey Phipps’ potential.

I don't think you mean to imply otherwise, but Reaves will be far more than a shooter, and definitely won't be a bench piece. He shoots it as well as any of the stereotypical sharpshooters, but his game is far more well rounded than guys who just fill that role.

Thanks for pointing that out. To set the record straight, I expect Reaves to be a complete player on both sides of the ball. It’s clear that posters who have seen him play in practice and those, like yourself, who are familiar with his game were not describing a player who is limited to shooting from the perimeter. Some have even said he may be the best player on the team.

I see Reave’s reputation as a three point shooter as a bonus. He’s much more than a one trick pony.

Wrong. If that were the case it’d be done months or year ago.

Unfortunately, white guards usually get the stigma of being good shooters with average (at best) athleticism, and cant play defense. It always will be that way until the player shows it on the court.

Maybe it was a recent "request".

Has anything happened recently wrt Phipps showing he can play at the P5 level, ie summer tournaments? Any new developments? Do you expect him to get other P5 offers?

Yeah. Avg 18-20 at UA summer. Shot 43-45% from deep. 6’1. Not 5’9.

More offers will come.

No recent requests. Trust me on this one.

State finals he drops 40 spot.

100% agree, but I have seen him play probably 10 times and I think he will have a tough adjustment to playing defense and being an above-average athlete at the D1 level. I have said, and continue to say, I like his game, but I think he will be less versatile than other guards OU is recruiting.

To CoachTalk's point, dropping 40 in a state final's game shows you the kid has stones and is willing to shot the ball. I love that. But my assessment of his overall game stands.

All that being said, if he wants to be a Sooner, let's sign him up!

Is it whoever commits first out of Hefner & Phipps, or does Hefner have first priority?

I may be wrong, but I think soonerjunky was referring to Reaves in his post, not Phipps.

Could take both. I think we are set on bigs for now. They like what we have.

FYI- Hefner’s granddad is who lake Hefner is named after.

Hefner will need a redshirt year if he comes. He actually wants a redshirt year.

So realistically, what are the chances of landing Bryce Thompson?

Phipps could be soon.

Think we’ve moved on from Hefner

His granddad must be something special to have a lake named after him before he was even born.
