Yet on this board, people have (without any evidence, mind you) accused him of being "retired on the job" and of hiring unqualified people based on his relationships with them. In other words, people are suggesting that he is a lazy, unethical guy who just collects a hefty paycheck without actually working or trying to do what is best for the university.
I don't know if it's the case with Lon, but literally exactly what you described happened with Bob Stoops and no one doubts his character.

Kruger will be retiring in a couple years. Not many people are in a situation where they want to take a job they may lose in a couple years. You know, job security? It's kind of important to most people.
You keep saying this. Do you have any inside info or are you just assuming based on age? I expect him to be around for more than two years, and most people who have written about it seem to agree. If he sticks around another four years or so, that's not going to be a factor. Assistant coaches change jobs all the time. Heck, most young assistants wouldn't plan on staying in the same role at the same school for more than a few years, anyway.

Bob Stoops didn't have us at the bottom of the Big 12 for 3 straight years either.

Just sayin'.

I say this based on his contract being up in two years, his results the past 3 years, and his age.
Young motivated assistants look for opportunity for upward mobility. A short stint under Kruger doesn't offer much opportunity for a young guy. That's why we got Molinari. It's an opportunity that appeals to an older, "failed" head coach.

I disagree. We need a defense guy. He is it.

Next guy will be a recruiting type and player development.
Carlin will take lead roll on recruiting along with the next guy.

Many teams are getting a defensive coordinator type.

Jim was ours.

I'm pretty sure you don't understand what nepotism is.

We were trending that way if he hadn’t fired his drinking buddies who had accumulated on staff and significantly upgraded the offensive coaching staff.

Not in the slightest. Recruiting had fallen off a cliff and we had subpar assistants across the board, every single one of whom would eventually be fired or forced out except for Cale Gundy. We finished in a 3 way tie for fourth place in the conference in 2014 with a 5-4 record, and were absolutely humiliated in the awful bowl we played in.

Nepotism refers to partiality to family whereas cronyism refers to partiality to a partner or friend. Favoritism, the broadest of the terms, refers to partiality based upon being part of a favored group, rather than job performance.[1]

At our absolute lowest we finished in the top half of the conference with a conference record above .500. That's in no way, shape, or form comparable to what has happened to this basketball team over the past 3 years.

But that season was sandwiched between a Sugar Bowl win and a CFP appearance. That's a pretty far cry from the mediocre slow drip playing out inside the Lloyd Noble Center.

From https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/nepotism (an Oxford English Dictionary site):

The practice among those with power or influence of favouring relatives or friends, especially by giving them jobs.

We can keep going back and forth about this, but is that the point of this thread? Do you think I didn't carefully consider my word choice in composing my post? Even if you're convinced (despite evidence presented to you) that I used the wrong word, did you for even a moment not grasp the point I was making? Does it give you a tingle to correct people on niggling (at best) "errors" that have nothing to do with the subject at hand? If so, I could throw in a typo for your pleasure or an "I could care less."

Loved that sugar bowl season, but that team dramatically overachieved. The 15 season was after you went out and made what I think will go down as the best assistant coach hire in history.

Again, Every single assistant from 2011 was fired or forced out aside from Cale gundy. That tells you all you need to know.

I really don't like a coaching staff made up of a head coach and a bunch of shady recruiters like Pooh Williamson... Give me guys with head coaching experience who can develop talent, teach, mentor, coach basketball, etc any day.
Pooh Williamson isn't a shady recruiter. He has worked with Tubby Smith who is an upstanding guy and coach. Tubby was let go or encouraged to leave at Memphis and Kentucky basically because he was on the up and up.

The problem with Pooh, and Cason as well, as they are just mediocre assistant coaches. Nothing more, nothing less. High floor, low ceiling. There isn't much upside at this point.

I guess that'd be fine if our program was humming along, but I'd prefer if we were adding higher upside assistants at this point to try to get back on the up and up.

Any examples of coaches that could fit that mold?

Pooh's resume is lightyears ahead of the average Lon hire.

Pooh has no value as a coach. Thats why he has worked for 18 schools.
