....when they were not playing the one or the two or the four.
Players like LeBron and Bird can (and often do/did) play every position on the team.
Magic Johnson, one of the best point guards ever to put on sneakers, played Kareem Abdul Jabbar’s center position against the Philadelphia 76ers once when Kareem was injured. That didn’t make Magic a center.

LeBron was always a point forward with his teams. But he was still noted as being a Small Forward. Still is, in fact.

1980 NBA Finals in the Spectrum. Went for 40+ if memory serves. NBA fans back then were so fortunate.
When you reach of certain level of hoops nirvana, you're whatever the situation requires. Larry Legend certainly fits that mold. As did Magic. As does LeBron.

You’re right, Earvin scored a magical 42 points in that game! The 76ers had no idea how to stop him. I was a huge Magic and Laker fan back then. I lived in Michigan once, had the pleasure of watching Magic play in high school and in college.
What a player! He truly was like a Magician with a basketball in his hand!
I think Benny Schroeder may be the steal of our 2022 class! Why he is not on every potential starting lineup in our discussions is a mystery to me? Call me crazy if you want, but I think he is that good!
