From Eric Bailey...

Quote:
NORMAN — The screaming sounds of elementary-school kids brought smiles to Oklahoma’s women’s basketball team Wednesday morning.

There was no silence during the Sooners’ 75-62 win over Stephen F. Austin inside Lloyd Noble Center. The best entertainment wasn’t only when Taylor Robertson was swishing 3-pointers or Ana Llanusa was pouring in baskets. During media timeouts, kids were dancing in the rows and singing along to pop music piped into the arena. Nearly 100 school buses brought 6,875 kids on the sixth annual Field Trip day.

It wasn’t a typical basketball game and that was all right with OU coach Sherri Coale.

“The energy that you get from (6,000-plus) elementary school children in the arena is why we play that game,” Coale said. “The energy, the opportunity with the platform to expose our product to young kids and hopefully all those young kids go home and tell their mom and dad that they want to go back to an OU women’s basketball game since it was so much fun.”

Is it that they didn't put in the work in the offseason? Or is it that our coaches don't know how to develop talent? Will we see more out of these girls later on in the season? I sure hope so. Right now I'm a little underwhelmed and deeply concerned about our inability to hold onto leads, especially against inferior teams. Don't even want to know what will happen come conference time if we're leaving a steady opponent. I will hope for the best though!

They have started out each game this year playing excellent defense and shooting an excellent percentage. If memory serves, they started out nearly every game last year in a hole and usually couldn't crawl out of that hole. That by itself is a big improvement. They haven't learned to maintain the offensive and defensive intensity that they show in the 1st quarter through the entire game.

First half great with good efforts by Madi, Ana, Lemon, Taylor and maybe the best effort by Gabby to date. Looks like she is getting into the flow.

Then the second half which was ugly and we were outscored 44-29. A lot of turnovers again especially by Ana.

Opposition was very weak and that may explain the drop off as I'm sure the ladies never felt the least serious challenge.

Three 2's by Taylor. Probably a career high.

According to Sherri, Gabby had pneumonia for the first few games of the season and played through it. She is finally now healthy for the first time.

Yes, a big difference in the way they've started games this season as opposed to last year.

If they can somehow learn to maintain that level of play, they should have a very nice season.

I'll go with this. It makes as much sense as anything I can think of about how poorly we played in the second half.

Taylor is no longer a one trick pony. She used back screens to get two nice buckets inside the arc. Is moving better without the ball and slowly becoming more of a complete scorer. I think that is due to Coach Stiles working with her.

I was frustrated with the second half, after the 31 point lead, the kids just didn't put their foot on SFA's necks and started making stupid mistakes and really bad passes. I do believe if these kids can learn to maintain their focus, and continue to play the way that got them their leads, they can be very successful, when they get lazy and start "shoe shopping at the mall" they get in trouble. That in part is lack of leadership, which I hope they can improve on as the season and games become more challenging.

Absolutely!!! I believe leadership like chemistry has to come from within the team. But accountability from the coach is the driving force for team leaders to step up and lead the team. Difficult to be a true leader despite the coach.

Taylor Maybe improving on her versatility offensively but she has a long ways to go defensively. And that sense I do believe she is still a one-trick pony. Ana is our best overall player but she still makes errors she made as a freshman. I think she tries to do too much sometimes and gets way too rushed. We have got to bring in talent at her level or better to help her out. Madi has also improved and I'm a fan of Lemon, but not seeing much improvement in any of the other perimeter players. it was very smart to bring Lemon in as a juco transfer, goodness knows what kind of team we would be without her at point! When Aspen gets a chance I like what I see In her! Really hope Scott can start playing soon, does anyone know what's going on with her? Will she perhaps redshirt?
