Normally everything regarding a players eligibility is based on the school year with a player having 5 years to play 4. But frequently players are given a 6th year to play 4 due to injury or extenuating circumstances. Although it happens only very rarely is that extended to a 7th season to play 4.
However, only recently a Oregon player was granted a 9th year to complete his career because he basically lost 4 years to injury. So I guess the only thing that is certain is never say never when it comes to college eligibility. There is always the exception.

Also we had Covid-19 which extended many players career by an extra 6th year to play which makes it even more confusing and difficult for the fan to follow.
