Re: Tempo
just took a look at this
our tempo number at kenpom 69.7 currently that is #237 in the nation ...
but the 69.7 number (what we are currently) .. would have been 48th last year and 52nd in 2021/2022 for the full season ..

Much like Bill Connelly's S&P+ rating in college football, Kenpom uses data from last season and it incrementally gets replaced with this year's results as each game is played. So I look for our Adj.T (tempo) rating to climb significantly as the season goes along. By late January/early Febrauary, with Kenpom you really have a good barometer on where each team is at that point.

Analytics can be more than just deceiving. But, yes, it can also be deceiving. You get a big lead at half and you slow it down in second half. Your opponent presses you more than teams supposedly above you have been pressed. Your opponent is slowing down their offense in order to give you fewer possessions. And then trying to use data after 2 games is a terrible idea. Businesses can go under by misusing analytics but in basketball no one really cares because it all comes down to W and L anyway.
I don’t care whether we are shooting earlier in the shot clock anyway. I care that we are moving and looking for a good shot; and that is also tempo.

Re: Tempo
Our first 3 games last year:
51, 66, 74 points
Our first 3 games this year:
89, 82, 93 points
It took us til the 11th game last year to top 80. We only went over 80 3 times last year. Against Central Arkansas, Alabama (our best scoring game), and an OT game against Texas.
If you don't think we have more tempo, I don't know what to tell ya.

Re: Tempo
I am more happy with how this team moves the ball until they get a good shot rather than how fast the analytics say we are playing.

I've noticed that too. Half court ball movement has been exceptional, so far.

Re: Tempo
that kenpom number is garbage. we push it off turnovers and missed shots every time. and we aren’t exactly slow getting the ball into the halfcourt. it was very evident n last night’s game. we are completing lob passes. it’s a new day.

Agree that we played much faster overall in game 3 and pushed at most every opportunity. If we can keep that pace up along with our shooting percentages, we're going to be hard to beat.
We're shooting 52% from the floor, compared to about 42% after three games last year. More free throws and better % there as well so far.

Just watched UTRG and tempo was even faster. Nice. Will be interesting to see how it plays out this upcoming week.

Re: Tempo
Honestly thought we were quite sloppy on some shots yesterday.

Oklahoma
Oklahoma is playing much faster this year offensively. Its average possession lasts 15.9 seconds, compared to 18.1 last year, per KenPom. The Sooners are scoring 21.1 points per game in transition, up from 11.8 last season, per Synergy.

Re: Tempo
Tempo is like night and day from last year.
It is clear to me that Moser slowed it down last year, when he realized his team could not match up athletically with the big12 teams. It was good coaching but we just came up small too many times in the final few minutes.
