Default Tempo

We had a few stretches of pushing the ball last night, but overall felt like tempo never got revved up. It will take time, but definitely didn't seem like we were going 90 or shooting early-clock shots...

Thoughts? Has anyone rewatched the game with this in mind?

PS - This is not a criticism: just interested to see how the experiment with pace plays out. Can the players adjust? Can Porter adjust?

Faster paced than any game last year. The athleticism went from a 2 to an 8 in one year.

It may have been competition but it definitely looked higher tempo to me

It was first game and a vanilla offense. Now think back to first game last year and compare them. No comparison on tempo.

Haven’t rewatched.

Scored 83. Early shot clock shooting is bad shots a lot of the time.

It was actually 90 but the score keeper messed up and put only 1 point on the board after Macs made a bucket late.

Edit: I just rewatched and the reason why they only added 1 point was because they mistakenly added 3 on the previous 2-pt fg by McCollum

I think the increased tempo is going to come from more transition buckets off of steals. We're still likely going to run a similar half court offense to last year. Honestly, that may not be such a bad thing. Last year the team had a true shooting % of 56%. Good for 77th percentile in all of CBB.

That is with what I think we can all agree on was less than ideal offensive talent and against many of the best defenses in the country. Moser's offense works, and gets good shots but you need talent to finish more of those opportunities.

The area we need to clean up (and adding McCollum should really help with) is the turnovers. We had a turnover rate of 18.1% last year which put us in the 13th percentile. Cut down on the turnovers and see a jump in true shooting percentage thanks to better offensive talent and this team should take a significant offensive jump.

According to Kenpom (and granted it is only one game, so take it with a grain of salt), our Adj. T (pace) is #267 in the country. Last year, we were #285 for the season. I expect us to be well under #200 before the season is over.

Ken Pom has us at 316 as far as tempo right now. Not seeing the changes so far.

KenPom's Adj Tempo stat is an estimate of the tempo (possessions per 40 minutes) a team would have against the team that wants to play at an average D-I tempo. Source: https://kenpom.com/blog/ratings-glossary/

In terms of our actual pace stats, and number of possessions per 40 minutes, we are 3rd in the nation so far at 79.3 possessions per 40 minutes.

Your Warren Nolan link for pace was for the OU WOMEN. The OU men are #216 in pace.

Here is the correct link:

Even if our pace was top 10, I wouldn't buy anything currently. The real season starts in 10 days.

Its just funny. Did you watch the games? Analytics can be deceiving..
the common eye test shows you that pressing, some quicker shots, early offense, etc that the speed is there.

I have seen spurts of tempo... but not buying it yet. I think the analytics is what I have seen. Should have been higher against these two teams.

I watched both games all the way through. Saw the pressing and a few quicker shots. We're faster. But we still only managed 68 possessions per game against two bad teams. Not saying we're a bad team or that Moser's not working on tempo or that we won't get better .... just that the proof is in the pudding, and right now, I don't see the change in pace.

Not sure of the intent with those types of responses, but it comes off as a bit condescending.

I'd be happy if we had a bit less snark (and that goes for my posts, too--I'm not letting myself off the hook). I appreciate all that Coach brings to the board, and I'd much rather see him offer counterpoints to a post he disagrees with. An LOL doesn't tell me much and it can come off as condescending (whether intended or not).
