The Athletic is doing a preseason preview series and OU is todayís featured team. The coaches talk in depth about several of the guys. Not surprisingly, they say they have seen improvement from the returning players. One thing of note is that they seem optimistic both transfers will be granted waivers. And they are clearly still very high on Vicís ceiling if/when he harnesses all his athleticism.

Yep, it is the best single source for sports writing by far. And the cost is very reasonable even once you have used up the guest pass.

I hate it when web sites hide their rates from potential subscribers. How much does the Athletic cost once one's free trial has ended?

With his length and quickness, he can guard 2 through 4, which makes him a defensive "wing," especially considering Lon's penchant for switching. He's not a Center as a defender.

Offensively, Not many systems have a 4 and 5 spot anymore. They have a center, point, and three wings, typically two "guard" wings and one "hybrid" wing. He would play the hybrid role (roaming the baseline), catch and shoot in the mid-range, back-side cuts off of drives/post action.

They run a lot of specials so I canít recall the standard rate, but I bought a gift subscription for someone a couple months ago and it was $40 for a year. So a tiny fraction of what a newspaper subscription costs, with all the sports content you could ever want!

current rates are 10/mo or 60/year.

i think he is closer to a college 5 than a wing

The Athletic runs specials all the time. I first signed up three years ago at a rate of $25/year. When it came time for renewal, I paid $60/year and didn't blink. It is my go-to sports site. The cavalry of good writers there beats the hell out of anything else going in the sports world.

As a Sooner fan, the coverage is a little lacking. The guy there, Jason Kersey, does a decent enough job, but there just isn't that big of a market. If you're a pro sports fan, as I am with my beloved, sorry-assed San Diego Padres, you CANNOT beat it.

Where they really win the day, though, is with their national columnists and features. I cannot tell you how many stories I've read about a subject of which I knew nothing written by a columnist whose work I've never consumed. It's really broadened my horizons on a lot of things. It confirmed what I've kinda/sorta known for a long time: when it doubt, root for the hockey players. They "get" it.

I'd recommend the Athletic to anybody. If you love sports, it's the best thing going.

I had it for a year. I liked the MLB coverage, but didn't find the OU material all that insightful. The guys covering the Lakers seemed more like soap opera writers than basketball columnists, though admittedly that was in the post-Kobe achilles/pre-Lebron era, so I guess that's fitting. I guess I didn't take advantage of the national columnists, though.

Good info. You mentioned baseball....would you have any insight on coverage of the Cardinals? And how comprehensive is the coverage on the Thunder?

There are designated beat writers for all the pro teams. Iím a sports junky and I can follow the Mets, Flyers, and Raiders as well as I could if I lived in their respective cities. And as 04 notes, the national guys are fantastic, too. Iíve not checked on the Thunder specifically, so Iíll defer to others on the quality of their coverage.

No clue on the Thunder coverage. As a Sonics fan, every article about them is a shiv to my heart.

Solid Cardinals coverage. They've got a guy for every team in all the big 4 sports. I'm not saying the StL guy is the next Rick Hummel, but they've put out lots of good content around the Covid mess.

You know Wichita....I find it fascinating that outside of OU sports.....some of us follow vastly different teams in different respective sports....me - Cardinals, Thunder/Mavs, and Washington Football Team.

Thanks for the info bud.

I agree! And Iíll be the first to admit that my fandom is all over the place ó people always wonder how the heck I started cheering for teams from Philly, Oakland, NY, and Oklahoma as a kid in Wichita in the mid 80s! Nice to know you also follow teams from different parts of the country.

From the list of teams that all of us follow, with the exception of Boulder, we all have at least one miserable franchise we are a fan of.....I guess it's a humility/loyalty thing or something.

Bet Iíve got you all trumped. Iíve been a Bengals fan for almost 40 years, dating back to the days of Kenny Anderson, Pete Johnson, & Collinsworth. Been to the Super Bowl twice, ran into Montana twice. Neat.
