Default Deepest Team at Oklahoma since…

We don’t have the star power at the top of the roster, but when was the last time we had 11+ guys who could play ball at this level. Maybe all 13 are capable of producing at this level. That’s wild.

I always hesitate to believe in depth till it shows up against good competition. I am very impressed by pretty much all the bench guys so far, but I’m not yet ready to proclaim that all of them will be able to consistently contribute against good teams. Of course, in any given game, you only need three or four guys to play good bench minutes, and I do think we have enough talent to make that a reasonable expectation.

Early in the season a lot of coaches throw out bodies to figure out the rotation. It's still to early to say how good or bad or deep this team was. Go back around the early part of last year we were saying how deep and good that team was.

I was impressed with Big Rick! Although he didn't score in the second game he looked mighty impressive in the first game. If he can just develop a little bit more he could be a legit star. I'm not sure where he's at eligibility wise but maybe next season he could be our top post.

On another note I have yet to see Johnson or Mawein play. Are they just not there yet? Even behind the freshman? When we landed Mawein I was thinking we had ourselves a superstar. Maybe we are just that deep this year. It's always hard to tell how good we are until conference time.

Both guys played late in last night's game -- they each scored 2 points. And they both saw time in the second half against UTSA -- Johnson scored 8 points and Mawein scored 2.

The benchmark team for DEPTH is the 1990 club. All one needs to know about the depth on that team is the name Terrance Mullins. As a freshman, he was the only reserve to play in the title game against Kansas two years earlier. So, in essence, he went from being the 6th man on OU's best team ever to being the 5th or 6th man OFF THE BENCH two years later. That 1990 team also did not have a true go-to guy - but several really good options (Skeeter Henry, Damon Patterson, Jackie Jones and William Davis were their four best players, but I'm not sure which one of them was the best).

I saw the past two games and couldn't help but be impressed with all the capable players we have. However, until we play a really good high major, I'm tapping the breaks on bragging about the depth. Still, early returns indicate there is at least a possibility we have 13 guys who are capable of making a big play for us at some point in the season. I don't remember ever saying that prior.

Playing 3 games in 4 days, its probably smart to play as many as you can get away with. Lets see if he plays less players tomorrow.

And come Tuesday, it'll be 4 games in 6 days.

Every year this topic pops up. We all get excited about the hype. Every year it turns out that we have 2-3 really quality players, 2-3 avg big 12 players and 2-3 quality reserves.
