Merritt is here
Unfortunately he was diagnosed with a stress fracture. It’s either foot or lower leg.

Re: Merritt is here
Thanks for the update, Vbdad!
God news Merritt is here, not good news about his injury. Do you think he will almost certainly redshirt now?

Re: Merritt is here
I believe he has already taken a medical redshirt because he is classified as a sophomore.

Yeah, he redshirted his first year of juco ball. Maybe with the same injury....
He posted this on twitter some time ago: "Although I suffered a serious leg injury that led me to miss my entire freshman season, I wanna thank God for still having coaches believe in my abilities."

Re: Merritt is here
With Polla gone and Merritt out for an indeterminate amount of time that gives us 10-11 players for practice. A lot of freshmen will get playing time in the fall to see who gets more plYing time as the year progresses. Not much room for further red shirts nor injuries.

It is very early July...stress fractures don't normally take 5 months to heal.

Large humans with recurring foot problems are usually out a LONG time.

Yes, you are both right about that. If it is an identical or similar injury to the same foot, that's definitely worrisome.

If we were counting on him for scoring...we are in big big trouble

Don't say that to Bill Walton. Stress fractures basically ruined his NBA career.

Some do, some don’t. Also multiple injuries piling up take it's toll, like Kevin Durant.

Re: Merritt is here
Ok, so with all that said.... where does that leave Merritt and this team?

Nothing has really changed. Merritt is on the team, but won't practice for awhile. I don't think they were really counting on him anyway. The guy didn't play significant minutes for his juco team so did anyone really expect much from him this upcoming season? He got here a month late and has Doolittle, Manek, Kuath, and probably Victor Iwuakor playing in front of him. He probably won't be able to practice with the team until at least September because of his injuries. JMHO

So because he has 3 years to play he will basically redshirt next year, but lose the eligibility since he already redshirted... and he will begin his career in full with 2 years of eligibility like most juco transfers.
Is that fair to say?

Yes, although he could theoretically recover from his stress fracture and play next season. Otherwise it's a wasted year.
I don't know if they still do it, but some athletes have been given a 6th year when they have lost 2 full seasons due to injuries. Jason White, former Sooner QB, played 6 years.... but missed 2 seasons due to knee injuries.

It still happens. Rare, but does happen, if both injuries are serious enough. Obviously way too early to know if that is the case here.
