Default Lon vs KSU

We can all agree that Lon refuses to prepare his teams to play against KSU, right? I feel like we have not beat those guys since Lon got here and very few close games.

It sounds like an absolutely ridiculous, insane conspiracy theory.

And KSU is a good team, clearly better than us this year.

All that said, there is an absolutely maddening trend watching our performances against them year in and year out.

Looking back, the funny thing is in Lon’s first year we beat them both times, and both times they were ranked (and we were bad). Since then we are 4-10 against them. For reference, there’s not a single Big 12 team we have a worse record against in that time frame - including Kansas.

Definitely ridiculous. And till this season, we'd blown them out three straight in Norman. In fact, we'd beaten them so badly that their seniors made winning in Norman one of the three or four specific goals for the season. But we definitely suck in Manhattan, no denying that.

KSU is much quicker, better rebounders, better defensive guarding, and above all they care.

Don’t agree

Haven’t won in Manhattan since 2012 but their team is simply superior this year

Regarding the OP:

If the implication is that Kruger somehow is intentionally (or subconsciously) unable or unwilling to prepare his OU teams to play against his alma mater, I call BS on that theory.

Kruger's teams are 6-10 vs KSU since he has been OU's coach, a 5-3 record in Norman and a 1-7 record in Manhattan. Contrary to what WichitaSooner posted earlier, there has only been ONE blowout win (IMO) in the entire Kruger coaching regime, the 81-51 beatdown of the Cats in Norman in 2017. Nine games were relatively close: 10 points or less, and six of those were by 6 or less; Four games of 11 to 13 points diffential; Three games where the point differential was 15 or more points, including the 30 point beatdown earlier mentioned. I guess that you could call an 18 and a 15 point win (in 2018 and 2019, respectively) blowouts, but not as bad as a 30 point beating.

Anyway, I don't buy the implication that Kruger somehow doesn't try against KState.

I don't know why, but for some reason Coach Kruger struggles against KSU and Bill Self struggles against OSU. I would bet anyone who knows them will stipulate to their competitiveness, so my best guess is they want to beat their alma mater so badly that their guys play a little tight. The operative word in that last sentence is "guess".

We had complete control of the last three games in Norman. Whether you call it a blowout is subjective, I acknowledge that, but the fact that the KSU seniors made winning in Norman a major priority shows that the guys involved in the games sure didn't think that Lon doesn't have his team ready to play against them. So yeah, the OP is off base, as I'd hope anyone can see.

They are much more physical than we are this year. We've struggled against strength all year and the better defensive teams. KSU is both of those.

When you are 20-34 (.370) in conference regular season games the past 3 seasons, you have to be losing to somebody. KSU is one of those teams.

While coaching at OU, Lon's overall record vs. KSU of 6-10 (.375) does not seem to be that abnormal.

Over 8 seasons at Oklahoma, Lon is 72-72 (.500) in regular season conference games.

With Buddy: The 4-years of the Buddy Heild era yielded a very good 65% winning percentage (47-25) in regular season conference games.

Without: The other 4 seasons have been tough, as Lon lost 65% of conference games without Buddy and his teammates.

A couple of those losses, maybe 3, were on last second shots by the KSU guard who transferred out. It seems like both losses in one season were of this variety.

Marcus freaking Foster. He beat us both games in 2015 -- at home we missed free throws late and they were able to send it to OT and then he hit the winner, and in Manhattan, he hit a bomb. That was also the game where with a few minutes left, one of their guys (maybe him) hit a three that was released after the shot clock buzzer -- before the next season, they changed the rule to allow that to be reviewed.
