Last year's schedule will be the exception and not the rule. OU nor LK have ever shown a propensity to consistently play a non-conf schedule like that. Back to normal now. Back to reality.

OU's schedule was ranked one of the toughest in the nation at least the past two years.

And in 2016-17, we played Clemson, Wisconsin, Wichita State, Memphis, Auburn and Florida.

In 2015-16, we played Memphis, Wisonsin, Villanova, Creighton and LSU.

2015-2016

- The Memphis team that went 19-15, including 8-10 in the American?
- The Creighton team that went to the NIT?
- The LSU team that failed to win 20 regular season games, and didn't make the Dance?

And who else did we play that season OOC? McNeese? Incarnate Word? Central Arkansas? Oral Roberts? A Harvard team that won 14 games that season?

I could do the same for most of the other seasons too. Our schedule next year doesn't look any different. Plenty of cupcakes, and some P5 schools. Some of the P5 schools will be pretty solid/decent, some won't be very good at all. It's not JUST about who the good teams are that you play, it's also about what the easy portion of the schedule looks like. Last year, that easy portion was still pretty easy, but it was considerably tougher from a numbers standpoint than what we normally play, or what we'll play next year. That isn't an opinion. It's a fact.

Hindsight is 20-20. Unless you criticized those schedules in advance, it's silly (and annoying) to criticize them in retrospect.

It's the nature of scheduling. You can schedule name teams from Power 5 conferences -- and we do -- but there's no guarantee about how good those opponents are going to turn out to be.

But you presented last season's schedule as some kind of outlier. It wasn't, as I demonstrated by pointing out that we'd played one of the toughest schedules in the country for two years in a row. As for the other seasons, plenty of teams don't play as many name teams as we did those years.

So two years is some kind of trend? lol

As a general rule, when a coach has a young team, they build an easier ooc schedule to give the young team some experience. When they have a veteran team, they build a more difficult schedule. Even the elite programs put a few cupcakes on their schedule. To put it in football terms, OU is an elite school. We have 3 ooc games every year. They try to have one marquee game against a top 10 type opponent, one game against a medium opponent and there is usually one cupcake game. All bets are off when schools cancel games that are already on your schedule and you have to add whoever you can get.

That doesn't really work in basketball, except maybe with a couple of games a year that get added late for various reasons.

These games are generally contracted at least a couple if not a few years in advance. Lon Kruger rarely has any idea as one season is ending what kind of team he'll have the following year (slight exaggeration), let alone 2-3 years in advance. Like I said, there are exceptions, but it's why OU generally schedules in a pretty consistent manner. Sometimes teams that were supposed to be good aren't, but the pattern is pretty much the same most years.

Is next year's team considered young? I know we have a lot of new faces providing depth, but most of our major minutes guys are upper classmen.

One year too late. Would have loved to see Tacko Fall play in the LNC

Interesting game... coached by Ben Howland. Went 23-11 last year, 10-8 in the SEC.

Can't remember if OU has ever played them before?

We've played them three times, and we're 0-3.

1996: we lost to their Final Four team in Norman. Abercrombie had 22 rebounds against future NBA "stalwart" Erick Dampier.

1997: lost in OT in Starkville. Kelvin had a bajillion losses like this in the early 90s.

2003: lost 54-45 in New Orleans. We made the Elite 8 that year, but we were just dreadful on offense. I watched every minute of this debacle. One of the worst offensive performances I've ever seen.

Was hoping for a better draw in the Big12/SEC challenge. We will kick their asses in Norman.

The time for the Oregon State game on November 12 has been set, 10 p.m. Central tip. And the game at Creighton is December 17 ... that means three good games to finish noncon, at Wichita State, at Creighton, home against UCF.

Yikes, that's a pretty late start for a Tuesday night. I'm a night owl, but 11pm in the east is pushing it, especially if we lose. I'm usually up till 1 or 1:30am, but if the game has just ended (and if it happens that we've lost), I likely will have trouble getting to sleep as I rehash the game in my fevered brain.

I can relate. I stay up way too late, but it is hard to fall asleep right after a game. Takes a while for the adrenaline to wear off, and it is brutal trying to sleep right after a loss.

Who else listed to a game we played in Hawaii during Billy's tenure? I started listening and assumed it would be a blowout and I would be able to go to sleep. No such luck!

I emailed Coach Sampson after that game and he (or his secretary, perhaps) wrote back the next morning to express admiration and appreciation that I'd stayed up so late (I think it went till 2 am here in the east).
