Default Very interesting news on Michael Porter

It appears as if Porter, Trae Young's AAU teammate and buddy and ESPN's No. 1 player in the 2017 class, may be available.

Quote:
@CoMoSports: Michael Porter Jr. has not signed a national letter of intent to attend Washington, meaning he could still consider Missouri. Story to come.
This was originally reported by the Mizzou rivals site, which I do not have access to.

Obviously, whoever wants to hire Porter's dad as an assistant will have the upper hand in this since that what initially drew them to Washington, but you know Trae Young will be in his ear if he's truly available.

I don't have access to the site, but the jist of the rivals site is someone close to the Porters told them he's considering committing to Missouri. Rumors are, Romar's camp feels like he's being fired. UW's AD has been meeting with boosters this week, and has asked Romar to make changes, and Romar won't do so. Changes include staff changes, assistant coaches, etc. and Romar doesn't want to do those type of things, so the AD is being put in a hole, where she either lets him do what he wants, or she fires him and starts over. The buyout is 5 million, so the meeting this week at their annual booster meeting is/will be interesting.

There's also rumors that Romar is getting tired of Washington fans anyways, and to get out of there, he needs to get fired to get the buyout.

The biggest issue with Missouri is that they don't have a coach yet. So while Porter might want to go home, he's got to deal with Missouri hiring a coach he likes to begin with. His dad will likely be a shoe in for the assistant job there, but it's not a given as it depends if the coach is willing to waste a spot for his dad for a couple of years.

ESPN is reporting that Missouri has offered Cuonzo Martin the job. He's the HC of Cal

Porter Jr is an awesome talent. Even if his dad can't coach a lick, Junior is worth whatever it takes (within the rules of course) to sign him to a LOI. Too bad OU doesn't have a coaching spot for senior.

Romar has been fired by Washington.

Look for Missouri to make a run at his dad as an assistant for Cuonzo

Missouri already hiring his dad

The Rivals report this morning was spot on. Romar knew it was coming, and the Porter's got things lined up

Hope he kills it at Missouri for the 1 year

Screw Missouri, they were TERRIBLE this year. To sign his dad as a coach just so they could land him, I hope they win 10 games next year. So sick of these 1 and done's not even making the tournament.

Kansas has done this like 5 times with several different head coaches. One of the scummiest programs out there.

I just don't get why a one and done kid would ever go to a school that's going to be terrible. Like, if you were planning to stick around for 3 years, I can see it being exciting to turning a program around. But he's going to go to Mizzou for 1 year, they're going to suck and miss the tournament, and he wasted his one year of college when he could have made a title run at Kentucky or Duke or Kansas.

His dad hasn't officially accepted the offer has he? From what I've read it just said "intends" to bring him on. Well we all have intentions that don't always pan out

Chance to resurrect a program and be the hometown hero. Mizzou hasn't won a road game since Jan 28th, 2014. So if he can do better than that, he'll bring excitement to the program. If he magically helped them to the tournament, in a weak SEC, he'd be king of Missouri.

They are going to be terrible. He'll be stuck in a miserable situation where they aren't winning, and he's not going to be the king of anything. The Mizzou fans aren't going to be fired up to go from 10-25 to 14-14.

They'll be fired up just to have Porter and changes. And going 8-20 whatever to 14-14 is significant improvement. Whether they'll continue to show up and watch, who knows. Trae would love to be a one and done but will likely be a two year kind of guy. Obviously OU was in a better situation than Missouri, but you could almost make the same argument on Trae. Why go to OU and not win the Big 12 or a title when you could go to UK or KU and compete. Sometimes, being the face of the program is better and fun.

No. He was from Columbus Missouri. His sisters play at Mizzou. His aunt coaches the women's team. His dad was an assistant for the women's team before taking the job in Washington. He, his dad, and brother moved to Washington because of that, but his mom stayed at the house in CoMo. This was why Missouri was always one of the teams he considered the most.

I was going to post something similar after reading this article...pretty informative if you want to learn more about the Porters' connection to Mizzou.

The article says he grew up in Indiana. He actually moved to/from Columbia, Missouri.

Also, Romar is Porter Jr.'s godfather, as Romar and Porter Sr. played together back in the 90s. - link

Look at what happened at LSU with Simmons the 1 year he was there and then this year, the year after. Wouldn't surprise me if Mizzou had the same outcome.

I'm not saying that Missouri is going to be world beaters next year but Martin is definitely a huge upgrade in the coaching department. We have all seen how much of an impact that can make and we will have to see if he brings in another guy or two that can have an impact on the team they already have. Which actually isn't a horrible collection of talent if you look at the rivals ratings for the last few years. Most of those guys are three stars plus and now they will be sophomores and juniors and Porter and maybe one other guy or two to that mix and they could be OK with Martin's coaching ability. He has at least proven it at the Division I level at multiple programs including Missouri State, Tennessee and now California and he has also had one and done players so he knows how to deal with that as well.
