Baseball is a totally different story. The draft is much longer and thousands of players matriculate to the minors every year.
And no, just because a rule is clear and uniformly administered doesn’t make it fair. Back to my TY example — how is it fair to prevent him from earning a living when he was clearly ready to play and thrive in the NBA? He had nothing to gain and lots to potentially lose if he had been forced to go back to college. If he had gotten seriously injured, he would have lost tens of millions, not because he wasn’t good enough to be making a living in the NBA, but because someone randomly decided to force him to go pro before he was ready (after high school) or wait till long after he was ready. Sure, as college fans, it would be cool to have the best players stick around longer. But the players should be prioritized.
