Lon is 2-8 in the Big-12 Tournament.

He is batting .200

Makes for a short visit to KC for Sooner fans.

Needs to go and not hire any of his disciples or coaches from his tree

If I'm not mistaken, those pre-conference tourneys are the only tourneys that Lon has been good in. He's so incredibly bad in postseason play that I'm starting to forget KS even had a postseason problem.

KS was pretty good in the post-season conference tournaments. I went to many of them and rarely went home after the first game.

KS certainly had too many early exits from all those NCAA tournaments he got OU into.

Yea but the same could be said about lon. In his 8 years we have won a tournament game in two

No doubt. I'm doing this from memory, so I may be a game or two off...but you'll get the gist in that we showed up to play in the Conference Tournaments.

1-1, 0-1, 2-1, 3-1, 0-1, 2-1, 3-0, 3-0, 3-0, 1-1, 1-1, 0-1

That's a 19-9 record from 1995-2006...to 2-8 from 2012-2019. Yikes!

Your memory is very good, as the actual record was 18-9 (I think).

Kelvin Sampson - Post Season Conference Tournaments at Oklahoma
I also listed the leading scorers for those KS seasons, just to provide context and bring back some memories of those teams.

Conference Tourney ... Season's Leading Scorers
1-1 (1995 Big 8) ... Ryan Minor (23.6); Dion Barnes (11.3); John Onjes( 11.1)
0-1 (1996 Big 8) ... Ryan Minor (21.3); Ernie Abercrombie (13.6); Nate Erdmann (12.8)
2-1 (1997 Big 12) .. Nate Erdmann (20.5); Corey Brewer (17.5)
2-1 (1998 Big 12) .. Corey Brewer (20.8); Evan Wiley (10.7); Eduardo Najera (10.5)
0-1 (1999 Big 12) .. Eduardo Najera (15.5); Eric Martin (12.1); Michael Johnson (11.6)
2-1 (2000 Big 12) .. Eduardo Najera (18.4); J.R. Raymong (13.4); Nolan Johnson (10.0)
3-0 (2001 Big 12) .. Nolan Johnson (13.2); Aaron McGhee (12.9); Hollis Price (11.8)
3-0 (2002 Big 12) .. Hollis Price (16.5); Aaron McGhee (16.0); Ebi Ere (14.6)
3-0 (2003 Big 12) .. Hollis Price (18.0); Ebi Ere (12.9); Kevin Bookout (9.4)
1-1 (2004 Big 12) .. Jason Detrick (11.4); Drew Lavender (11.3); De'Angelo Alexander (9.6)
1-1 (2005 Big 12) .. Taj Grey (14.6); Terrell Everett (12.5); Kevin Bookout (11.5)
0-1 (2006 Big 12) .. Taj Grey (14.2); Terrell Everett (12.7); Michael Neal (12.4)

18-9 Overall Record in Conference Tournaments

So, in 12 conference tournaments, KS was One-and-Done three times.
In 8 seasons at OU, Lon has been One-and-Done 6 times.

Not that it's important, but I'm pretty sure we went to the Big XII Championship game in 2000 - only to be beaten by Iowa State. If that was the case, we would have had to win two games. Also, in 1998, I thought we had to play 4 games (hence the 3-1 record). Hey, I'm wrong about things all the time, so that part isn't a big deal. But I still think KS went 19-9 and not 17-9.

Thanks for the audit. I have to use my glasses AND a magnifying glass to read the small print in the "Year-By-Year Results" in the Press Guide that OU mails to me each year. You are certainly correct about 2000. OU beat Mizzou and Texas that year in KC, before falling to Iowa State in the finals.

According to the OU Press Guide, in the 1998 tournament OU beat Mizzou and Texas, before losing to Kansas in the finals. So Kelvin was at least 18-9. My guess is that I made another mistake somewhere and he was really 19-9 as you originally posted.

1998 OU Basketball Season

Those KS coached OU teams, more times than not, at least made it to the semi-finals. That helped make all those trips to Kemper Arena in KC memorable (even if my memory is not the best).

3-10 in KC in the '10s. Two semi appearances I think. Glad I can't remember a lot of those games. Really the only ones which stick out are the Buddy "run" and being thrilled to beat the Oklahoma Aggies in front of scores of fans one late Thursday night.

18-9 it is. There is no way we would have played 4 games in the 1998 conference tournament with an 11-5 record. Regardless, I long for those days. We won 4 conference tournament games since Kelvin move on 13 years ago. Iíll assume that is dead last by far in the Big XII.

I wonder how many of those losses were to the eventual champion? I know 1995 was because we lost to Big Country/OSU. 2000 we lost to Iowa State with the great elite 8 team they had in the finals. 1999 we lost to OSU in the first round, I think they won it.
