Default What do you expect from Jalen Hill?

High School Stats
  • 17 points, 5 rebounds per game
  • 1.5 assists per game, 2.5 turnovers per game
  • 41/98 from 3pt line... 42%
  • 74% from free throw line
  • Blocked 19 shots on the year as a senior
  • Shot 258 times from inside 3pt line, 98 from 3pt line...

Any time at this level you see a guy is 6'6'' or 6'7'' and listed as a guard, you worry a bit or get super excited. There just aren't many legitimate guards that size at this level. Is he a tweener? Is he a legit guard? Can he defend guards at the Big 12 level? Is he going to grow at all and be 6'9''?

Was the Gatorade Player of the Year in Nevada.

I've seen his film, he appears to be a good athlete who can play the 2 or 3. Has a nice 3 point stroke. Plays D well. I expect him to play all 4 years and get better each year developing into a solid starter as a So/JR or maybe even an All B12 caliber player by his Jr/Sr years

I’ll respond to your question by adding a few tidbits I posted last month. I’m already a huge Jalen Hill fan. He’s a high IQ recruit on the court and in the classroom who does a lot of things well, including playing defense. He didn’t get an offer from KU, UK or Duke, but he had 16 offers, most of them high majors.

What’s not to like about this kid?

Quote:
—Gatorade Nevada Player of the Year
—6’ 7” guard who led his team to a 25-6 season and the Class 4-A State Final
—Averaged 17.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.2 steals, while shooting 56.5 % from the field.
—Coach says he’s a “high percentage 3 point shooter” (last time I checked it was 46%)
—League MVP and First Team All State Selection.
—Coach says he’s an excellent passer and he can finish with both hands.
—Coach says “He’s got an elite-level, old school post-up game that you can’t stop and his IQ is off the charts. He’s the real deal.”
—Coach says this about his defense: “Jalen Hill might be the best on-ball defender I’ve ever seen.”
—Active in the community as a volunteer providing support for children with cancer.
Jerry Meyer Evaluation

“Has solid size and athleticism for a small forward. Plays with strength. Slasher who prefers to score off the dribble. Reluctant shooter off the catch beyond the arc at this point. Not really a playmaker for teammates but is a solid ball handler. Plays with s good motor. Strong rebounder who is also active on defense.”

I worry. Like you said, most end up busting, or develop into 4's in today's game. I also don't think Nevada HS ball is all that competitive.

What do I expect from him? No idea. Certainly not much next year though.

If Giannnis were granted NCAA eligibility and signed with OU tomorrow, you'd find a way to denigrate him and suggest that he wouldn't be a good fit. You are flatout incapable of offering anything beyond a tepid compliment of anyone or anything related to OU basketball. Absolute joke. But man if we'd gotten the unknown 6'2" juco, then we'd be onto something.

So, Jalen’s 16 offers, among them Zona, DePaul, TCU, ASU, Florida State, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Oregon, USC and UNLV doesn’t mean anything to you?

I don’t have to be an expert on Nevada high school basketball to accept that eleven high major coaches and a handful of mid-majors coaches may know more about this kid than I ever will.

I'm more on the worry side... How many 6'7" guards were there this year on the Big 12?

I’m confused at why everyone is so caught up with labeling him a guard or a post and acting like therems nothing in between.. He’s a small forward, which means he’s not going to be a primary ball handler and will catch the ball both on the perimeter as a shooter and in the high and low posts and will take mismatches both against smaller guards and slower footed bigs.

If he can be a 3 and D wing for two years, then expand his play as an upperclassmen, he’ll be a very good player for us. Cameron Clark maybe.

Though Clark was a more anticipated recruit, that is a good comparison. OU doesn't play the true small forward a lot, but they will if he can play defense and create mismatches.

You realize the only team on that list that is really on OU's level is Zona, right? I mean, FSU has been good here recently, but ASU? TCU? Missouri? Illinois?

And what in my post said I didn't want him at OU? Or that it wasn't a solid get? I simply said I don't expect much early in his career, and I think he'll probably end up being a 4.

OU is not even close to Arizona's level when it comes to recruiting. Not really on Oregon or USC's, either. FSU has been recruiting really well these past few years as well. Depaul is the only school I'd really consider chumps on that list. Would have considered TCU chumps as well pre-Dixon.

There you go, throwing out useless facts to disprove WT’s narrative.

Even if we agreed OU’s program is superior to all of those schools except Zona, I think it’s safe to assume the majority of the head coaches are not too bad at evaluating talent.

Yes he was, on both counts! How even a bad coach could end the season at 17-14 with a roster like the one below is a mystery to me? So much talent but very little to show for the players he brought in.

Roster

Player Class Pos Height Summary
Byron Houston SO F 6-5 18.5 Pts, 10.0 Reb, 1.5 Ast
Royce Jeffries SR F 6-6 13.9 Pts, 5.6 Reb, 0.9 Ast
John Potter F 6-8 11.0 Pts, 2.7 Reb, 1.2 Ast
Darwyn Alexander SO G 6-0 10.2 Pts, 2.3 Reb, 3.7 Ast
Corey Williams SO G 6-2 9.4 Pts, 3.2 Reb, 2.7 Ast
Mattias Sahlstrom F 6-10 7.4 Pts, 3.8 Reb, 1.2 Ast
Richard Dumas F 6-7 12.7 Pts, 5.4 Reb, 2.3 Ast
Chuck Davis SR G 6-0 5.0 Pts, 1.4 Reb, 3.9 Ast
Johnny Pittman C 7-0 2.4 Pts, 2.7 Reb, 0.1 Ast
Chris Gafney SR G 6-4 1.6 Pts, 1.3 Reb, 0.8 Ast
Earl Jones G 6-2 1.1 Pts, 0.3 Reb, 0.1 Ast

true. houston, jeffries, williams and dumas all spent time in the league. he had talent. Ive always been impressed that he's stayed at FSU so long. I guess he runs a good program. If he's graduating kids and the fans/school are all happy then c'est la vie.

Leonard Hamilton 1980s = Scott Drew 2000s. Both guys simply learned on the job how to coach while elevating the recruiting at their respective schools. We used to make fun of Drew all the time as a bench coach...but not so much the past decade.

I think Drew turned the corner when he put them in that zone defense before the conference tournament. Thats when things started going well for his groups.

Leonard hamilton still isn't a Rollie Massimino or anything - but he's a much better coach now than he was in stillwater. But it doesn't look like he's aged a year since he left. In fact, he looks better now than he did then.
