Default Start of practice

With practice getting underway today, I would love to read some reports from those of you who are able to attend over the next few weeks. All the recent recruiting news has us all excited for next year and beyond, but I think the team might be better this season than many people are expecting. I'm not predicting a conference contender or anything crazy, but I don't think we are in as bad a shape as some suggest. I definitely don't see this season being a repeat of the 2016-2017 season.

I second that motion. Would appreciate practice reports greatly. If I lived in OKC, I would attend a bunch of them. Just can't get there from Tulsa.

As for this years team, I just don't know or have a firm opinion at the moment. I think McNease, Polla and Freeman will give us a little better collective play at the five (assuming all 3 progressive some with another year). I think manek, Doolittle and freeman will give us collectively better play at the 4 (all improving from last year), and I think Lazenby, James and Odomes will give us a little better play at the wing (same as above, assuming all 3 progressive some with experience). I don't have any idea at the point. Haven't seen much video of the 3 new kids.

Our biggest two problems last year, in my opinion, were lack of rebounding on both ends and outside shooting. It remains to be seen if we will improve in those areas.

If one of the new kids can effectively run the point, I think we will likely be equal to or better than last years team.

We will defend better.
A big question is whether or not to redshirt Kuath.

I think we will be fine with Calixte and Reynolds sharing PG duties. I like having a more “traditional” PG.

If he can't help us this year.. then he's prolly going to get recruited over.. if he hasn't been already with these 2 hs forwards.. so use him up if so

Requires VIP access, but there's some good info on the 247 board - https://247sports.com/college/oklaho...ing-122510043/

It'll be moved in a couple of days to the 24/7 hoops board, which I think is public and not members-only.

It's an enthusiastic and positive report, I will say.

Yes it is. Brandon Drumm answered nearly every question I had about the players and what we could expect this season. He seems to believe this team may be better than most people think. I couldn’t agree more.

Brandon Drumm has done a great job since joining OUI. In his basketball practice update today he talked about:
1. How experienced the team is and it shows that they have really been practicing since June.
2. Brady Manek has put on muscle... and its making a difference. Has some quotes from McNeace.
3. What a good addition Austin Reaves has been both as a player and a leader.
4. How well freshman Jamal Bienemy has played and his work ethic.
5. OU seems to be in good spot with recruiting Malik Hall.... if they want to be.

Thats my Cliff Notes version. Bob Przybylo over on Sooner Scoop has some updates, too. Hes really done a good job on recruiting updates. Both sites have upped their game on basketball coverage.

Could be true, but what if he's better than the other JUCO coming in next year? Then you would want that extra year for him. He's a raw athletic prospect and those usually make the biggest jumps year to year if they put in the work.

I had a long post with hatred directed at Drumm (I deleted). Most of what I said was right. He's terrible and he's a copycat. All of his bball recruiting stuff was copied from Bob P. A significant portion of his football recruiting stuff is copied from TFB. Drumm's best trait is making stuff up.

Anywho...credit to him for at least putting some bball stuff out there. He's not someone I'll really listen to in re: basketball anything, but have it if you so choose.

FWIW, I had bad intel on the juco name. I thought Drumm was referring to someone named Gerald Drumgoole (not a juco). Nah, it's Alondes Williams from Triton College who is slated to visit OU this weekend.

Just throwing this out there based off of a few minutes of film I watched and some interviews from rivals. Again, hard to take much from this but here's some thoughts.

Doollittle, Manek, James, Odoms and McNeace look like they're in great shape. I hope Doo has a bounce back year after what had to be a frustrating period for him last season.

Hannes looks like he's dropped considerable weight which should only help with his mobility. I understand the boards questioning for the fighting Finn but we don't need major minutes out of him. Let's be honest, it's Jamuni time this year but I'll give Hannes some credit for his conditioning. He just needs to be a serviceable reserve on certain nights and match ups.

Calixte looks quick on the court. I know he's got some question marks as well but I feel better about him than some other last minute PG we've added in the past. We'll see, he's small but he's not frail. He's not afraid to take into the trees, just gotta make sure he doesn't cause a forest fire by smoking to many of them. I kid I kid.

Miles Reynolds kinda reminds me of former OU guard transfer Jason Williams from a few years ago. Heady kind of player, crafty with his floater and decision making.

I think Lon really likes what Austin Reaves brings to the team. I think we all could probably quote a typical, almost generic answer Lon can give to reporters questions. What's the term I'm trying to describe? Oh yeah, coach speak. That said, Lon was almost gushing about Austin and how he's doing so far. Talked about his work ethic and attitude. I think there was some reports questioning those things while at Wichita State but Lon, in his own way really complimented Austin's attitude and approach. I look forward to seeing him in a OU jersey this following year and think we've added a talented and overlooked player to the fold.

Jamal Bieniemy is another player Lon praised a little more then usual. I think he'll be an active player on the court. We need guys that make the unselfish winning plays that add up through out the coarse of the game. I think he could be a Je'lon Hornbeak type of player but with more of team first attitude. A really solid 4 year guy that will help us win a lot of games. His shooting looked liked it's improved so that's already a good sign. Some guys continue to get better and haven't yet plateaued or peaked. I hope and think thats the case for Jamal.

Now on to the player I know most love to question, Kur Kuath. Well, Ty and Hannas are in the running depending on the day but you're not going to find many excited about Kur on any of the message boards. The doubters may be proven right but I still think the guy could surprise some of you. I'm not saying he's an all big-12 projection but he'll cause some problems with his length alone. I saw three pick and roles he guarded and each one he defended differently and correctly. I was so frustrated last year watching us get JV'ed on the pick and roll that seeing those three plays out of Kuath gives me some hope. You're not going to win every play but 3 or 4 stops a game can get you a win. Sure, his weight will come into play on certain match ups but I think he'll be able to cause some havoc and win some of those battles as well. If we can get good guard play, it will only make it easier for Kur on the offensive side. Here's a quote from Kruger On Kur:

Been outstanding. Hes already got bigger and stronger since hes been here. Put on some weight. Good instincts, good shot blocker, rim protector. Hes quickly improving offensively so we feel really good about where hes at.

In addition to recent news about Alondes Williams, here's a tweet about a 67 late blooming guard Gerald Drumgoole. Says OU is getting involved along with Minnesota, Georgetown, Pittsburgh, Iowa State, Middle Tennessee and South Carolina. I'm not sure what to think about either of these guys but the coaches are still peeling that onion. I'll admit I may shed a tear if we don't add Tyson Etienne but it might put us in a better position to land some of the talent coming up the next couple years locally. At least that is what I'm telling myself.

Glad you confirmed OU’s involvement with Gerald Drumgoole, DSuits! I really like him! He reminds me of Shaq Morris, a local kid I thought OU should have signed a few years back. Drumgoole has some guard/wing skills to go along with his PF body. He’s listed at 6’ 7” 210, so guess he’s more of a SF than a PF. He just looks bigger to me.

I like his flair for the dramatics too. Check out his bowling skit with the student section when he was introduced before the start of a game.

[quote=AdaSooner;609382]Glad you confirmed OUs involvement with Gerald Drumgoole, DSuits! I really like him! Hes built a lot like Shaq Morris, a local kid I thought OU should have signed a few years back. Drumgoole has some guard/wing skills to go along with his PF body. Hes listed at 6 7 210 but looks bigger to me.

I don't know a whole lot about him but he holds football scholarships to go along with some good d-1 schools. I think that would confirm your opinion about his physical style of play. I'd imagine when he starts to concentrate on a specific sport that he'll take off.

I Would love to add his 5 star teammate Isaiah Stewart as well. Just your typical 6'9" 1/2, 250 lbs bigman with a 7'5" wingspan. Crazy to think that recent commit Corbin Merritt has almost identical measurables. Skill wise, I'm sure there's a drop off but it's just a little confirmation about Corbin's physical attributes when stacked up to one of the the nation's elite prospects.

Fun times are ahead my friend. I wish people still read newspapers so the students at the LNC could throw it into the air like the good ole days. I guess when they grow up they'll tell their kids about contracting diseases at foam parties so it all balances itself out in the end.
