Observations on the OU Softball schedule ...

(Last Year - 2018) The Sooners schedule had 54 regular season games, 22 of which were scheduled to be played in Norman at Marita Hynes Field.

**********

2019 Oklahoma Softball Schedule
52 .. Total games scheduled (regular season)
15 .. Total HOME games scheduled (2 have been cancelled by weather)
37 .. Games scheduled AWAY from Norman, Oklahoma

2019 Big-12 Conference Games Only
04 .. Home Games .. Baylor (3); OSU (1)
14 .. Away Games .. 3 Each @ TTU; KU; Texas; ISU; plus 2 games @ OSU

One reason for the Home/Away imbalance in the 2019 Big-12 schedule is that the three 2018 games schedule to be played last season at Iowa State were moved to Norman due to weather. So, in 2018, OU played 14 of 18 conference games in Norman.

Obviously, the bulk of the Non-Conference schedule each season is played in warm-weather tournaments and most of those games are neutral site games.

The Point: I wish OU played more home softball games in Norman; but, with the timing of the season and the weather ... it is what it is. Hopefully, the team will get more home games by hosting the NCAA regionals and super-regionals.

By the way, anybody who doubts Tim Walton is foolish. Tim Walton is the winningest Softball coach in the country over the past decade. He has a higher winning percentage than Patti and that sounds impossible. Of course, he is an OU guy so I am biased. He was the starting pitcher in the National Championship game on the OU 1994 title team. He was also the hitting coach on Patti's 2000 OU National Softball Championship team. The bottomline is Florida is not dropping off.
I tend to agree that Florida is not dropping off. Indeed, in another post somewhere on this board, I used the disgust of a few Florida fans on robocoach who thinks he has lost his mojo since it has been a while since he won---like about three years. Except for the fact that I called him Murphy, having Bama's coach's name stuck in my mind, I still tend to like his work at Florida.

But, I do not buy into the SEC's scheduling ambushes. Get on the road and play someone. Florida has been doing more of that this year than usual.. But, they are still heavily committed to playing in Florida. Look at the schedules of the SEC teams. They may get out of the area one time for five games, excepting for Kentucky. They like to bring in an occasional Big Ten team and ambush them with southern cooking which seems to account for their rpi. The Big Ten simply can't play at home until late spring.

Speedy: You're absolutely right about the lunacy of UF fans who are calling for Walton to be run out of Gainesville.

Softball fans – like football and basketball fans – are a fickle lot.

OU 12 Santa Barbara 1

----Santa Barbara scored in the first when the first of the four strikeouts reached first when the third strike got away from Elam, and she threw just enough wildly to first to pull Green off the bag. A two-out double scored her.

----Lopez struck out thirteen in 5 1/3. At one point, she had ten Ks and nine outs.

---OU didn't get a hit until two out in the third. Rogers singled, Alo doubled, and OU tied it at 1-1.

---It remained 1-1 until the sixth. OU scored five in the sixth and six in the seventh to make a close game look like a blowout.

----Lopez: 13 Ks, 1 BB, 1 hit, 1 unearned run

In the first 3 games in California this weekend OU has 40 hits. 9, 8 and 9 different hitters had base hits. This is the way we need for this team to hit. We had 7 different innings in the 3 games when we scored 3 or more runs.

Since the Dartmouth/CSUN game lasted until about fifteen minutes ago, the game will probably be a bit late, maybe 5:20-5:30.

Live stats indicates the game has not started as of 5:16 pm Norman time. Also the game is not broadcasting over AM 1560 in OKC as scheduled.

Game is on. It is 0-0 after one.

OU beat CSUN 11-0 in five

The final game is against Illinois which is no joke (tomorrow at 11). They beat OSU and Kentucky. Couple of silly losses to Stephen F Austin and Sam Houston State. But, they haven't played a home game yet. They are 14-4.

The game today vs. Illinois should be a good test. Who will Coach Gasso start inside the circle?

Vestal has had a couple of injuries during the past two years. She is about normal now. But,she looked at the staff:

Lopez Jr
Juarez Jr
Saile Jr
Mendes Jr
Conrad Jr

She thought it would be a good idea to redshirt, get fully recovered, and have more of an open field after all of these departed. She'll have one year with a lot of people ahead of her. Then, she'll have three to star.

Meanwhile, OU just run-ruled Illinois which is a borderline top 25 team, having beaten OSU and Kentucky, 11-1. I think it is the fourth straight run-ruled win, and the fifth straight double digit scoring game. The pitching allowed a run in the first inning of the first game in California. Then, it was the fifth of the last before they got another run. Great pitching in California. Only Illinois was a good team.

For those interested here are team and individual stats through March 16. Team BA is .365 and list 7 starter with a .354 (Green)-.441 (Romero) batting average. We have hit 45 HR's (Romero 9 and Clifton 6) in 27 games on pace to hit about 100 if we make the WCWS. We have scored an average of 7.62 r/g compared to 6.66 in 2018. With the Big 12 being stronger this year with both Texas and Tech fielding stronger teams, OSU about the same, Baylor down some and the tournaments remaining I would expect our numbers to fall slightly as we finish the season. Last year we hit .321 with 82 dingers.

The team ERA is 1.09 with 13 HR-A. Mariah Lopez leads the team with a 0.61 and 1 HR allowed. Shannon Saile has a 1.20 with 5 HR-A and "G" Juarez a 1.57 with 6 HR-A. Last year's ERA was 1.12 with 20 HR-A. "G" appears to be turning it on the last few starts so hopefully we will be stronger as a staff going forward.

Our fielding percentage is .985. Last year OU lead the nation with a .986.

We are still a little less than half way through the season but on paper it appears that Patty has another complete team that can hit, score runs, pitch and field with the best of them. Now we have to hope for a break or two which will allow up to win the whole kit and kaboodle.
