Practice

Anybody got any scoop? Didn't see any threads on it.

Re: Practice

I thought they had a big press conference when practice officially starts every year including interviews with players, etc.

I did not expect fully open like Lon but this seems odd.

FWIW, this is probably about all we will get to see of practice.

Went by the offices on Monday and signed up to be notified to see the team practice. Apparently they are going to have some open practices and scrimmages.

I'm glad to hear that (even though I won't be able to attend any time soon).

Good to here, do people need to sign up?

Re: Practice

It should be obvious by now that Porter Moser understands the value of positive public relations. His appearances at other OU sporting events or anywhere he can “spread the good news” by his presence (see Butch Beard’s coaching clinic) is by design. He just wants it to be controlled, mostly through @OU_MBBALL’s Twitter feed.

Lon created a monster, and I’m betting even he was wishing he had more control of his open door policy. We know for sure Mike Shepherd didn’t want to see a repeat of that policy.

While we all enjoyed the practice reports Garyeb2 and others used to post, I doubt if we will ever see anything like that again. I think Moser’s practices will be more formal, likely orchestrated by Porter and his coaching staff, but almost certainly controlled as they should be. And, to be honest, I’m fine with that!

How do we know that's Shepherd's attitude, Ada? I'm not doubting you; I just don't know how we know.

And I also don't understand what you mean by the next paragraph. Though I only attended one of Coach Kruger's practices, it was certainly was organized. Do you mean that when Coach Moser's practices are open to the public, they will be more of a presentation for the fans' benefit, rather than standard, typical practices, but with fans in attendance?

I'm wondering the same thing Ada and like Skyvue, don't doubt you just surprised by the statement. The few times I got to attend practice Shepherd (and everyone else for that matter) couldn't have been more accommodating.

I know Moser won't adopt Kruger's policy and like most, I'm ok with that but I hope there is some opportunity to maybe watch a scrimmage occasionally. I remember Billy and even Kelvin would allowing that sometimes.

Sky, Garyeb2 said Mike Shepherd was not happy with the practice reports he posted here. Iím paraphrasing, I have no plans to do a search for Garyís posts or my communication with him via PM. That eventually led to an end of Garyís practice reports.

I think itís possible Lon may have signed off on Coach Shepherdís talk with Gary, but thatís pure speculation on my part. All I know is what Gary said on the board and what he told me. I see no reason why he would make it up. As I said, I think Lon created a monster with his open door practice policy, one Mike Shepherd would not want to see repeated. Thatís speculation on my part, too, but itís based on what I believe was an accurate story I got from Garyeb2.

In ďmy next paragraph,Ē Iím talking about the release of information, not the practice. The publicity on everything Moser does seems to controlled by OU basketballís Twitter feed. They do a great job! I especially like the recruiting reports and pictures of the players and their families in Sooner garments with Porter and his staff.

Re: Practice

Thanks for the clarification, Ada. That makes sense (and the whole thing about Gary's practice reports stirring things up rings a bell now).

Sky, it’s good to know you remember that, too. I feel sure there are others.

I went back as far as I could on my PM history in an attempt to refresh my failing memory, but it wasn’t far enough. As you know, portions of our PM files have to be deleted periodically to a specific limit (I believe it’s 2000 PMs total in our inbox and sent files).

I also checked Garyeb2’s profile, and to my dismay learned he has not been on the board since February, 2017. He was a great poster and an asset to the board once!

Re: Practice

Mike Shepherd did not have a problem with guys on here giving practice reports. He had a BIG problem with reports being written on certain practices that weren't supposed to be publicized. I'm working from memory here, but I seem to remember a set of practices that took place, closed door, in the summer following the Final Four run. Gary was as "IN" as "IN" could be, and he came by the complex to watch. He was such a regular presence back then that nobody really batted an eye. He came back on here and answered a few questions and put together some stuff in a report for the board. THAT sent the buzzers off throughout the basketball office and got him a quasi-reprimand from Shepherd.

Gary was a GOLD mine of information from within the hoops program, and it's a shame a couple of close-minded posters ran him off. This place was infinitely more enjoyable when posters like he, leopard and the oupostman would drop juicy nuggets of info. Their batting average was significantly higher than any guru we've seen before or since.
