Did I see Iwuakor in that video clip, or did someone else copy his hairdo? I also thought I heard a player or coach call out his name, “Victor!” at one point.

All of this may be my overactive imagination because I want him to be ready to go when the season tips off. I think Victor Iwuakor could be a key contributor in our front court next season—no worse than our third or fourth best big by conference time. Call me crazy if you want. I think he’s that good.

Thanks for clearing that up for me! Obviously my imagination coupled with what I was hoping to see got in the way of reality.

Do you feel good about Victor’s chances of qualifying and making it on campus in the not too distant future? His unusual circumstances living in Southlake instead of attending school the past few months has me worried some.

He’ll be here. Don’t worry. He was around campus last week.

Hey Ada, I think the player you saw is Anyang Garang. He's originally from Sudan that moved to Uganda and then started playing organized ball in Australia. I'd say he's the least known and most likely to red shirt player we signed last year.

Brian Snow for 247 gave a scouting report about Garang about six months ago.

"A long and lean power forward. Has tremendous measurables. A native of Uganda, Garang has a 7-foot-1 wing span. Also, he tests well athletically with a 32.5 inch vertical leap. Garang needs to get a lot more physical in the post, and also needs to get used to the game of basketball, as he is relatively new to the sport. There is tremendous physical upside, but right now there is a long way to go for Garang to reach that potential. His skill work will need major improvement going forward."

Right now, Garang is a project that has a long way to go. I get it that fans will question why Kruger took a flier on a skinny kid that's still learning the game. He might make great strides and shake up the lineup before he graduates or just be the thirteenth guy on a bad bench. All I ask of you is to take 4 minutes and watch the NBA global piece on Anyang. If you still think Anyang won't make a impact in some way during his time at OU, great. I'll give you the glory when that day comes. I like seeing cool people succeed so I'm riding with team Anyang to reach his potential and goals.

I couldn't get the video to embed but here's the sporting news article with the 4 minute video on Garang.

You’re right, dsuits. Anyang Garang is the player I saw. The hair style had me fooled.

When Anyang came to OU on his visit several weeks ago, I read his story, saw his interview and watched every highlight video I could find. I was impressed then and I’m even more impressed now.

If you don’t mind, I’m going to join you on “Team Anyang.” There’s a lot to like about this young man!

Count me in as well. Heck, if Kur can be that 3rd or 4th reliable post option this year would be a huge lift. I really like the potential of big Ric and Vic for our future front court. They might both see meaningful time this year but there could be some adjustment period as well. Ricky is still relatively young to the game and we know about Victor having to set his senior year.

Bob Pryzbylo mentioned when Ric Issanza committed that he was not a red shirt candidate. We'll see if that holds true. IMO, Victor's Iwuakor motor is to important to set another year. If this is the case, Kur's role may look similar to M. Reynolds early in the season. Maybe Kur offers stability early while the young guys get their feet under them and the transition happens as the year goes along. The following year Kur gets a little more court time with the departure of Doolittle and the questions of his scholarship worthiness is answered to all.

I understand it could go the other way as well. Kur, Merritt, Polla and Issanza have question marks and areas they need to improve. The game is evolving and the odds of all 4 reaching that are not in their favor. I'm not trying to say Kuath is going to have the "alley-opp" renamed to the
"Kur-plunk" but I guess I just see a little more in Kur than most on this board have expressed. It wouldn't be the first time I was off the mark.

Either way, I hope Kur can help his teammates this year. Kur's story, much like Anyang are journeys of overcoming adversity and beating the odds. Why not support and pull for kids that aren't taking the easy way out. The easy way out for Kur happened last year with his back injury. Kuath responded and took advantage of the time just like Austin Reaves. Now he's put himself in a position to contribute when a bunch had written him off from the beginning.

Kur could start at 5.
Doo 4
Manek 3
Reaves 2
JB/DH at 1

I know I’ll get roasted. But pile on.

If Kur starts, one of Manek/Doo needs to sit.
Your line-up might get some play later in the game if Williams doesn't make it in.
But Harmon/Bienemy/Reaves need to start.

2 best players likely aren’t sitting. Doo can defend a 3.

We’ll see. It’s early.

I agree. Also a friend went to father son camp fri -sat. Said he talked with a few OU people while there. Kur weighs right around 215. Doo and Manek right around 230 with Manek being a couple pounds heavier than Doo. I remember reading during the big 12 season that Manek was sick over an extended period and dropped below 205 lbs during the season. He said Doo and Manek both looked in great shape

If Kur isn't better than Manek, he isn't starting. But again, I have my doubts.
