Norman — Oklahoma’s bid for a fourth-straight trip to the Sweet 16 ended Tuesday night in a 74-70 heartbreaking loss to St. John’s.
After trailing most of the game, the Sooners started the second half with an 11-5 run to take a 47-44 lead after a Morgan Hook three-pointer with 16:51 to go. They also led 52-50 with 14:30 left, but the Red Storm used a 10-0 run to take the lead for good at 60-52.
But from that point on, OU could never get over the hump.
They would cut the lead to one point twice and had a chance to tie the game in the final minute, trailing 73-70, but Aaryn Ellenberg’s three-point attempt hit the right side of the rim and bounced out of bounds with 37 seconds left.
Junior Whitney Hand led the way for OU with 16 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Griffin added 12 and Hook finished with 10.
With the loss, the Sooners end their season at 21-13. St. John’s now advances to the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history.
